Biologist (National University of Córdoba, Argentina), specialist in social sciences with concentration in health (Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences), specialist in epistemologies of the south (Latin American Council of Social Sciences), and doctorate in education sciences (University of Geneva, Switzerland).
The guiding thread of her career is the search for elements that make it possible to understand the problem of Chagas from an integral perspective and, at the same time, highlight the role of education and communication as key tools to address this complex and prevalent issue.
Independent researcher for the National Board of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). Her current research project is “Analysis and development of didactic strategies and resources to deal with Chagas disease in different educational contexts.” Her work is being developed within the Group of Science Education, La Plata, Argentina, through research activities, teaching, communication, and dissemination.
She is the founder and coordinator of a group called, What are we talking about when we talk about Chagas? (¿De qué hablamos cuando hablamos de Chagas? www.hablamosdechagas.org.ar), whose main objective is to promote an approach to Chagas from an integrated and innovative perspective in different educational contexts, employing various languages to communicate understanding of the subject. By linking multiple voices, diverse artistic expressions, and unconventional spaces, the group seeks to show Chagas in different contexts and highlight the importance of education and communication in the public treatment of this problematic disease.
She is a member of the advisory council of the International Federation of Associations of People Affected by Chagas Disease (FINDECHAGAS).

Since 1999 she has worked as a nurse in the Drassanes-Vall d’Hebron Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit, part of the Infectious Disease Program run by Catalan Institute of Health’s International Health Program (PROSICS). She is also part of the Immigration and Health team (ETIS), specialized in people affected by Chagas disease and their communities.
She is the author of the pedagogical guide to the Expert Patient Program Catalonia® in the chronic phase of Chagas disease, run by the Catalan Institute of Health. She trains expert patients from this program and coordinates patient groups. She is the author of numerous educational materials: “To know or not to know. I feel fine, but they say I have Chagas disease”, an informative documentary about Chagas disease in a European context; and “Around Me”, an educational game about health determinants, among others.
Principal investigator of the research module project for primary healthcare professionals in Barcelona, XB 2012 Catalan Institute of Health Plan. Publication: “Knowledge about Chagas disease in patients and healthcare professionals, in a non-endemic environment: are there differences?” Founding member of the Association of Friends of People Affected by Chagas Disease (ASAPECHA), of which she is still an active member. His work focuses on community health related to sexual affective health, tuberculosis, Chagas disease, and health determinants. He previously contributed to research and public health projects about malaria and the formulation of public health in the Amazon basin, Brazil.

Both disciplines, medicine and art, have been used in his career for the creation of educational health tools (www.espictools.cat) in different formats (games, songs, documentaries, animation, etc.) which are specific to international health.

She also has a diploma in advanced studies and research from the University of Valencia, Spain; a master’s degree in tropical medicine from the University of Valencia, Spain; and a master’s in international health from the University of Alicante, Spain.
She has numerous publications and has attended many conferences about Chagas disease. She participated in the Chronic Active Leader Patient Program by the Ministry of Health of the Valencian Community, Spain.
She helped to found the Association of People Affected by Chagas Disease, Volunteers, and Friends (ASAPECHAVAE) in Valencia, Spain in July 2009. She also helped to found the International Federation of Associations of People Affected by Chagas Disease (FINDECHAGAS) in October 2010. She is a founding member of the Chagas Disease Association of the Valencian Community (ACHACOVA).
Throughout her professional career she has participated in many different activities related to those affected by Chagas disease, such as workshops, conferences, and lectures about its pathology with relevant groups from endemic areas, indigenous peoples, and healthcare workers. She also participated in screening campaigns for the disease, facilitating access to proper care for those who tested positive and psychological care for carriers, their family members, and their social environment. She has also been involved in meetings for mutual help and self-help regarding Chagas disease.

Since 1979 she has done volunteer work in the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, in primary healthcare procedures with a focus on community epidemiology and community control of prevalent health problems, principally malaria, yaws, and onchocerciasis.
From 1998 to 2010 she was the coordinator of Chagas intervention in the Tropical Medicine Center at the Sacred Heart-Don Calabria of Negrar Hospital in Verona, Italy.
She is the author and coauthor of several different publications about Chagas disease and the role of community participation in controlling prevalent health issues. She is also in charge of intervention for community control of Chagas disease in some Awa indigenous communities in the province of Esmeraldas in Ecuador.
In addition, she is the president of the Center of Community Epidemiology and Tropical Medicine of Esmeraldas, Ecuador (CECOMET); a founding member of the Italian Association for the Fight Against Chagas Disease (AILMAC); and an advisor for the International Federation of Associations of People Affected by Chagas Disease (FINDECHAGAS).

Her study, research, and publication topics include: social control of patients at the Clinical Hospital UNICAMP, Brazil; treatment of the elderly in primary healthcare in Campinas: access to care; Chagas and work in an urban environment; civil associations and the guarantee of rights to healthcare: experience in a group of patients with Chagas disease; and challenges and perspectives in the organization of healthcare for the elderly population in primary care: a literature review. She works at the Clinical Hospital UNICAMP treating patients in the Chagas disease outpatient clinic.
She is a member of the UNICAMP group that performs studies related to Chagas disease. She is also a member of the Scientific Council of the Association of Carriers of Chagas Disease in Campinas and Surrounding Region (ACCAMP) and of the advisory council of the International Federation of Associations of People Affected by Chagas Disease (FINDECHAGAS).
She is responsible for social assistance and is part of the health team that treats patients in the geriatric clinic.
Ana coordinates the health education group Flower of Old Age (Flor da Terceira Idade). She is the director of the Social Service, Health, and Aging Improvement Program at FCM/UNICAMP.
She gave a class via distance learning called “Health and Aging in the Older Adult” for the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ).
Ana has also taught classes at various university departments of social services: Faculty Saint Lucia in Mogi Mirim, Dom Bosco Salesian Faculty in Manaus, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas. She prepares and contributes to the organization of educational and informative activities and materials related to Chagas disease, neglected tropical diseases, right to healthcare, and aging.
In addition, she participates in, organizes, and coordinates events, discussion forums, and seminars related to those topics. She works on these issues in workshops, classes, and conversation circles. Ana contributes to the increase of social and political participation in organized society, such as associations of people that live with Chagas disease, to make changes in legislation at the municipal level. These changes include laws related to the celebration of Municipal Chagas Disease Day, Municipal Neglected Diseases Awareness Week, and the national law of neglected diseases in Brazil.

In Barcelona she conducted an applied research study about Bolivians affected by Chagas disease, which allowed her to learn about the experiences and significance of Chagas in the framework of the migratory process and understand the mechanisms by which the team normally intervenes when faced with an unknown disease. Her research helped establish the basis of community and social intervention with regard to Chagas disease in the Drassanes-Vall d’Hebron Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit in Barcelona.
She currently works in teaching and research at the Autonomous University of Chile. She conducts social research in healthcare. Thanks to a postdoctoral FONDECYT grant (3160106) and Alberto Hurtado University, she has begun working on reproductive health in migrant populations. She is also the director of the FONIS project “Chaco Chagas Chile”. She has conducted research and published in the areas of health and migration.
She has been able to combine her interests in intervention and research with other interests such as photography, watercolor, and other creative endeavors. This manifests in both her intellectual work and in the development of intervention strategies with people affected by Chagas disease.

También es responsable de la intervención para el control comunitario del Chagas en algunas comunidades indígenas Awa de la provincia de Esmeraldas (Ecuador).
Además es Presidenta del Centro de Epidemiología Comunitaria y Medicina Tropical (Cecomet) de Esmeraldas (Ecuador), miembro fundador de la Ailmac (Associazione italiana di lotta alla malattia di Chagas) y asesora de FINDECHAGAS (Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Personas Afectadas por la Enfermedad de Chagas).

A lo largo de su trayectoria profesional ha realizado diversas actividades relacionadas con los afectados por la enfermedad: Talleres, conferencias y charlas sobre la patología, a los colectivos provenientes de las zonas endémicas, personas autóctonas y sanitario. También participó en campañas de cribado para la enfermedad, si son positivos, derivados para su atención sanitaria, tratamiento si procede y posterior seguimiento. Me siento bien, dicen que tengo la enfermedad de Chagas” (película informativa y documental sobre la enfermedad de Chagas en un contexto europeo), “Around me” (juego educativo sobre los determinantes de la salud ), entre otros. Investigador principal del proyecto del módulo de investigación para profesionales de atención primaria de Barcelona. (“XB 2012”) Plan del Instituto Catalán de la Salud. Investigación: «Conocimiento sobre la enfermedad de Chagas en pacientes y profesionales de la salud, en un entorno no endémico: ¿hay diferencias?» Miembro fundador de la Asociación de Amigos de las Personas Afectadas por la Enfermedad de Chagas (ASAPECHA), de la que sigue siendo miembro activo. Miembro organizador del III Encuentro Internacional y II Asamblea de FINDECHAGAS, celebrada en Barcelona en 2012.
Licenciada en Medicina y Especialista en Hematología de la Universidad de Pernambuco-UPE / Brasil. Maestría en Salud Pública del Instituto Aggeu Magalhães / Fundación Oswaldo Cruz – FIOCRUZ / Ministerio de Salud de Brasil. Miembro del Servicio de Referencia en la enfermedad de Chagas del Estado de Pernambuco – Pronto Socorro Cardiológico Universitário de Pernambuco Prof. Luiz Tavares – PROCAPE, Universidad de Pernambuco – UPE. Colaboradora en diversos proyectos de investigación y publicaciones sobre la enfermedad de Chagas. Sus intereses de investigación abarcan el área social, cultural y artística de las personas con enfermedad de Chagas. Coordina el Proyecto CorArte: Arte con Corazón, desarrollado con pacientes en servicio en el Servicio de Referencia. Asesor y Miembro de la «Asociación de Pacientes con Enfermedad de Chagas, insuficiencia cardíaca y cardiomiopatía de Pernambuco» (APDCIM), la primera asociación de personas afectadas por la enfermedad de Chagas en el mundo, creada en 1987. Miembro del Consejo Asesor de la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Personas Afectadas por la Enfermedad de Chagas (FINDECHAGAS).
Doctora en Estudios Avanzados en Antropología Social, por la Universidad de Barcelona. Magísteren Antropología y Desarrollo por la Universidad de Chile, Trabajadora Social porla Universidad de la Frontera en Chile.
En Barcelona realizó una investigación aplicada sobre personas bolivianas afectadas por el Chagas, que permitió conocer las experiencias y significaciones del Chagas en el marco del proceso migratorioy comprender los mecanismos a través de los cuales el equipo sueleintervenir en relación a una enfermedad no conocida. Su investigación contribuyó a sentar las bases de la intervención comunitaria y social, en relación con la enfermedad de Chagas en la Unitat de Medicina Internacional Drassanes de Barcelona. Actualmente trabaja en docencia e investigación en la Universidad Autónoma de Chile. Desarrolla investigación social en salud. Gracias a un “Postdoctorado Fondecyt (3160106) y la Universidad Alberto Hurtado, ha desarrollado la línea de salud reproductiva y migraciones. Actualmente dirige el proyecto FONIS chacochagaschile.cl. Ha investigado y publicado en áreas de salud y migración. Su interés tanto en la intervención como en la investigación, se ha conjugado con otros intereses como la fotografía, la acuarela, elementos que interactúan creativamente, tanto en su labor intelectual, como en el desarrollo de estrategias de intervención con personas afectadas por la enfermedad de Chagas.
Ha sentado las bases del trabajo comunitario con la población boliviana en la Unidad de Medicina Tropical y Salud Internacional Drassanes del Instituto Catalán de la Salud, miembro fundador de la Asociación de Afectados por la Enfermedad de Chagas (ASAPECHA) y del Consejo Asesor de la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Personas Afectadas por la Enfermedad de Chagas (FINDECHAGAS).

Chagas disease today coexists with the COVID-19 pandemic. From the reality we are living, our communication resources are being more virtual than ever.
The phrase “Chagas connect @” is present in all three proposals to encourage and invite people to connect with “Chagas” and its realities.
The message that we intend to convey is a world in connection, embraced, surrounded and trapped by social networks. Through them we can make visible the reality of people affected by Chagas disease throughout the world.

The proposal brings together a family, different people, in different conditions and ages who can be affected by Chagas disease. In any part of the world there could be a person affected by Chagas.
Chagas is and should be a global concern as it affects its population. People move and human mobility has made visible Chagas on the planet. This is why man sustains the world.
The girl holds in her hands a magnifying glass where the Trypanosoma cruzi are observed, they are visible.
Chagas disease has been made invisible and this magnifying glass allows us to get closer and observe what we can detect in the blood. We not only see the parasites but the people affected.
The obviously pregnant woman raises her voice and tells the world that Chagas exists. Women of childbearing age and pregnant women should be a priority.
The world hears, sees and recognizes Chagas and the people affected by it.

The proposal revolves around the house, as a meeting place and social space to share and live, in turning it into an image of a safe and happy place.
The brown and green colors are identified with the autochthonous colors, which together with the rest, make up the hope in the form of the sun (yellow) on the back.

The megaphone is a device to increase the volume or sound, to spread the voice. We propose this great megaphone for April 14, to expand our voice to all, to make known our struggle with and for Chagas, to show that we are not only remote, stigmatized people. We live and transmit our experiences in a different and friendly way so that everyone knows that we are not alone. I finish with something I always said since I found out that I have Chagas: Chagas does not discriminate between social class, age or origin. Basically the logo proposal is friendly for that reason, it does not have to be structured or stigmatized. It seeks to show the other side of Chagas. (Ruth’s words)

Hemos incorporado varios elementos en el diseño, incluida la importancia global de la enfermedad, su transmisión vertical y el vector triatomino.
Fine Arts artist, Expressive Arts Therapist (ISPA Institute, Barcelona, Spain), Educational Expressive Arts Facilitator (Salve Regina University, RI, USA) and Social Educator (UNED University, Spain).
Born in Mexico City (Mexico), he developed as a Fine Arts artist at various art institutes in Mexico and Catalonia (Spain), as well as at different artists’ studios and ateliers, some of them in Italy.
He has presented more than a hundred solo and group exhibitions in numerous countries. His artistic work relates to the intention of Art as an instrument of transformation of consciousness and society.
He has coordinated several public pictorial projects, murals and artistic works.
He has worked with expressive arts for a wide range of groups: inmates in penitentiary centres, substance abusers, HIV-AIDS affected, migrants, illiterate adults, women victims of violence, elderly, children and teenagers with personality disorders, Chagas disease affected, etc.
Between 2009 and 2017 he was part of the chore educational staff at the Expressive Arts Therapy Master Degree at ISPA and IATBA Institutes (Barcelona).
As an expressive arts therapist, he consults privately in Girona (Spain). He also offers professional supervision on the same field.
Since 2006 has participated in several artistic, educational, therapeutic and healthcare programs for a variety of peoples related to the Chagas disease in different areas, all driven at the Drassanes-Vall d’Hebron Unit of Tropical Diseases and International Medicine (Barcelona).
Since 2017 he is a current member of the WHO TG6-IEC.

El diseño propuesto alrededor de una casa, como lugar de encuentro y centro social para compartir y convivir, transformándola en una imagen de lugar seguro y feliz.
Los colores marrón y verde se identifican con colores autóctonos, que en conjunto con el resto de la imagen, forman la esperanza representada por el sol (en Amarillo) en la parte posterior.

La propuesta presenta a una familia en conjunto, de personas de edades y condiciones diferentes que pueden estar afectados por la enfermedad de Chagas. En cualquier parte del mundo podría haber una persona afectada.
El Chagas es y debe ser una preocupación global en la medida que afecta a su población. Los movimientos migratorios de las personas han hecho visible al Chagas en el planeta. Dichos movimientos son parte de la acción de los seres humanos en el mundo.
La joven sostiene en sus manos una lente de aumento donde se observa el
Tripanosoma cruzi, haciéndolo así visible a la enfermedad a través de la representación de esta lente de aumento que nos permite observar de cerca lo que se puede detectar en la sangre. Significa que no solo vemos el parásito sino a las personas afectadas.
La mujer visiblemente embarazada alza su voz y dice que el Chagas existe. Las mujeres en edad fértil y las mujeres embarazadas deben ser una prioridad.
El mundo escucha, mira y reconoce a las personas afectadas por Chagas.

Proponemos este gran megáfono para el 14 de abril, para expandir nuestra voz a todos/as, y para dar a conocer nuestra lucha con y por el Chagas, para mostrar que no somos personas remotas ni estigmatizadas. Vivimos y transmitimos nuestras experiencias de un modo diferente y amigable de modo que todo el mundo sepa que no estamos solos/as. Finalizo diciendo algo que digo siempre desde que supe que tengo la enfermedad de Chagas: el Chagas no discrimina entre clases sociales, edades y orígenes. La frase «Chagas connect@» está presente en las tres propuestas para incentivar e invitar a las personas a conectarse con el Chagas y sus realidades.
El mensaje que deseamos transmitir es el de un mundo conectado, entrelazado y mediatizado por las redes sociales. Mediante ellas podemos visibilizar la realidad de las personas afectadas por Chagas en todo el mundo.
