EP. 08 HISTORY
In their classroom, along with their teacher and classmates, Juana and Mateo interview Carlos, a historian. Carlos shares information about different historical events related to Chagas. He tells them about Darwin, American mummies, Carlos Chagas, and Salvador Mazza. To everyone’s surprise, Mateo reflects about the amount of information that is known about Chagas and how, even so, it continues to be such a problem for many people.
LET’S TALK ABOUT CHAGAS
JUANA AND MATEO AGAINST CHAGAS
Juana and Mateo Against Chagas is a series of 8 episodes created using stop-motion animation. Each episode shows Juana, a lively girl who runs the TV show Chau Chagas along with Mateo, her friend and secret admirer.
Their show begins and ends in an improvised studio set up in Juana’s bedroom and takes place in a semi-rural community. In each of the different episodes, Juana and Mateo discuss Chagas with different people (a teacher, a “vinchuquero”, a doctor, a neighbor, Mateo’s grandparents, a builder, and a researcher in scientific history).
Through the interviews that Juana conducts, both professional specialists and community residents share their experiences and knowledge with relation to Chagas.
COORDINATING INSTITUTIONS
Juana and Mateo Against Chagas is a co-production of CONICET Documental and Pakapaka, created by El Birque Animations as a project by Mariana Sanmartino (CONICET researcher, member of the Group for Science Education IFLYSIB CONICET UNLP, and coordinator of the group “What are we talking about when we talk about Chagas?”).
GUIDE
“The Guide to Juana and Mateo Against Chagas” (2014) is an educational material that goes along with the series Juana and Mateo Against Chagas (and vice versa), aimed primarily at educators and people connected in some way to health promotion and education.
It is organized into 8 chapters, fitting in with the 8 episodes done by Juana and Mateo. However, just like the series, it is not necessary to read the chapters in a specific order. Each chapter of the guide contains one of Juana and Mateo’s interviews (with important information about Chagas, unanswered questions, and topics for reflection), along with supplementary information and suggested activities (searching for specific answers, reflection/synthesis, and creating your own resources).
